Our Story
ASHTON (Action on Smoking and Health To Orientate Nation) was inspired by students who smoke at LRT Line 2 Legarda Station (by a pathway where UE students use it as a short cut from Legarda Station to UE Gastambide Gate and vice versa). Some of STL 11- 2M, namely Luvina, Alleah, Regina and Joanne use the pathway and every time they walk through, they always inhale the smoke coming from smokers (and they don't like it). They wanted to protest because as of this year, the government just passed an Executive Order No. 26 that states smoking in public is banned but were afraid not to be heard and doesn't know how to make an action about it. Like an answered prayer, Empowerment Technology comes into the situation where they have to make an organization for a cause. The students thought it can be their way to show their opinions so they created ASHTON as an organization. At first, they thought "ASH" would be okay as a title but decided it was plain and many organizations may have the same name as theirs so they added "TON" (unit of weight) which can be connected to ash that means lots of ash when combined. The initials ASHTON were also inspired by a person named "Ashton Irwin" of 5 Seconds of Summer because the gals were fans of the band.
